Quick answer
5 Inch Gutters in Anaheim and North OC, CA: A 5 inch K-style seamless gutter is the right fit for most single-family roofs, including the 1950s and 1960s single-story homes found all over Anaheim, Garden Grove and Westminster. The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Anaheim forms them on site and pairs them with 2×3 or 3×4 inch downspouts based on roof area. Call (714) 276-6631 or book online.
Drive through Garden Grove, Midway City or Stanton and you will see street after street of single-story homes with low-slope roofs. That is the kind of roof a 5 inch gutter was made for. Formed seamless on site, it carries a hard storm off a typical ranch roof without the cost of going bigger.
Knowing where it stops being enough matters just as much. Upper roofs draining onto lower ones, long runs with a single outlet, and big tile or metal roof planes are the cases where we look at 6 inch gutters instead.
5 inch gutters in North OC
Replacing the original gutters on a 1950s or 1960s North OC home
On most single-story ranch and tract homes, the 5 inch size was never the problem. The joints, the hangers and the downspout layout were. Here is what changes when we put new 5 inch runs back up.
Plenty of the gutters we take down in Anaheim, Garden Grove and Westminster are already 5 inch, and many of those houses still only need 5 inch. What gave out was everything around the trough: sectional joints that dried and split, nails that worked loose as the fascia moved, and a single downspout asked to drain an entire back eave.
A new seamless 5 inch run on hidden hangers handles the first two. The third is a layout question. A run under 40 feet can drain through one downspout, and anything longer gets two or more. On a long ranch eave, adding that second outlet is often the difference between a gutter that keeps up and one that spills at the far end.
We also check what has been added since the house was built. Patio covers, room additions and reroofs all change how much water reaches certain runs, and those are the spots where 5 inch sometimes stops being enough.
Where 5 inch works, and where we step up
| Roof section | Our usual call | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Main eave of a single-story shingle roof | 5 inch | Roof area and pitch are a typical match for the size |
| Long rear eave over 40 feet | 5 inch with two downspouts | A second outlet means water reaches a downspout sooner |
| Run over 40 feet that cannot take a second downspout | 6 inch | One outlet has to carry the whole run, so the trough needs more room |
| Lower roof or patio cover catching an upper gutter’s water | 6 inch | That run carries two roofs, and a 5 inch spills there in heavy rain |
| Tile or metal roof section | Usually 6 inch | Water arrives faster or in larger volume than a 5 inch reliably catches |
| Shingle edge without a proper drip edge | Checked first | The 5 inch rules assume the drip edge carries water cleanly into the trough |
When a section lands in one of the step-up rows, we put 6 inch gutters on that section only and keep 5 inch everywhere else.
Changes since the house was built that affect sizing
- A patio cover tied into the main roof edge.
- A room addition whose roof drains toward the original gutter.
- A garage roof that now empties into the house gutter.
- A reroof from shingle to tile or metal.
- A new patio slab where a downspout used to empty onto soil, which may call for underground drainage.
- Planters built up against the wall right where a downspout lets out.
Keeping a 5 inch trough at full capacity
A smaller trough has less room to spare. A few handfuls of ficus leaves, jacaranda blossoms or pepper berries packed at an outlet do more harm in a 5 inch gutter than in a 6 inch, because the water has nowhere to go but over the front. Our dry months make it worse: debris builds up from spring to fall, Santa Ana winds add grit, and then the first winter storm asks the system to move it all at once. A gutter cleaning before the rainy season keeps the full 5 inches working, and BroGuard micro-mesh keeps most of that debris out in the first place. If you are replacing the whole system, every run comes off the truck as one of our seamless gutters, cut to the length of each eave.

It usually will if a few things line up: runs under 40 feet have at least one downspout, longer runs have two or more, the gutter does not overflow in normal rain, and the roof is asphalt shingle with a proper drip edge. If your roof misses one of those, ask about 6 inch.
When the gutter sits under another roof that already has gutters. A lower 5 inch run catching water from above takes on both roofs and spills in heavy rain. Large, steep, tile and metal roof sections are also better served by 6 inch.
On most of them, yes. The 1950s and 1960s single-story homes across Anaheim, Westminster and Garden Grove are typically a good match for 5 inch, as long as the downspouts are placed right. We still measure, because a room addition or a large patio roof can change the math.
The standard is a 2×3 inch downspout, and we step up to 3×4 inch when the roof area calls for it. The bigger downspout is an easy way to add drainage capacity without changing the gutter itself.
It is the cost-effective one, and it handles average rain well. Since much of our rain falls in a few concentrated winter storms, we size for those storms. If one section of your roof needs more, we can run 6 inch there and keep 5 inch everywhere else.
We form 5 inch in K-style, the profile on most North OC homes, and in half-round. Aluminum comes in nearly twenty baked-on colors, and copper and steel are options too, so the gutter can match the trim on a Fullerton bungalow as easily as a Cypress tract home.
