Gutters for Cypress homes on old dairy land

Cypress started out as Dairy City. Local dairy farmers incorporated on July 24, 1956, partly to keep developers out, and a year later voters renamed the town Cypress, after the 1895 Cypress Elementary School and the cypress trees planted around it as a windbreak against the Santa Anas. The dairies sold to builders during the 1960s anyway. The census counted 1,753 residents in 1960 and 31,569 in 1970, and about 68 percent of the city’s homes still date from 1960 to 1979. Those houses line Valley View Street, Walker Street, Orange Avenue and Lincoln Avenue, around Oak Knoll Park, Arnold Cypress Park and Cypress College, and most are now on their second or third set of gutters.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Anaheim belongs to Sara Baayoun, and our crews work out of Fountain Valley, an easy run up to Cypress. Here we clean and flush gutters by hand, reseal joints and rehang sagging sections, form seamless gutters right at the curb, replace weathered fascia and install BroGuard micro-mesh guards. Estimates are free and written, with repair and replacement laid out side by side when both make sense.

Cypress is flat, about 39 feet above sea level, and it was once nicknamed Waterville for its artesian wells. Today the Moody Creek and Coyote Creek channels drain the north end of town, and Carbon Creek is a major drainage channel for this part of the county. None of that helps when a downspout empties against your slab. On a 60-year-old house we check where every downspout ends, extend the short ones and run underground drainage where water has to cross concrete. With El Niño in the forecast, fall is the time to do it.

Year-round

Your Cypress gutter calendar

Cypress gutters work hard for about three months a year and collect debris for the other nine.

  1. Fall · Sep to NovGet ahead of the rain

Wind and falling leaves load the trough. A cleaning and downspout flush in October sets the house up for winter.

  2. Winter · Dec to FebWalk the house in a storm

Look for sheets of water off the edge or puddles at the slab. Note the spot and we will trace the cause.

  3. Spring · Mar to MayRepair and protect

Seal joints that dripped all winter, rehang loose sections and add BroGuard before the trees leaf out.

  4. Summer · Jun to AugPlan the upgrade

Long dry weeks make summer a good time to replace original gutters and add underground drainage.

Cypress Gutter Questions, Answered

How often should I clean the gutters on my Cypress home?

Once a year, in the fall, works for most Cypress homes. Houses under sycamores, pepper trees or a big ficus often need a spring cleaning too, because those trees shed through much of the year. If climbing a ladder is no longer something you want to do, our maintenance program puts both visits on the calendar for you.

Are original 1960s gutters still worth repairing?

Some are. If the metal is solid and the leaks are limited to a few joints, resealing and new hangers can keep them working. Older systems can also rust through from the inside or lose their slope, and then patching just moves the leak. In that case a seamless replacement formed on site is the stronger fix, and the estimate will show you why.

Water pools along my slab after it rains. Can you help?

Yes, and it is a common Cypress problem. The city is flat, so water that leaves a downspout right at the wall tends to stay there. A longer extension solves the simple cases. Where the water has to cross a driveway, walkway or patio, we install underground drainage that carries it out toward the street.

Do I need gutter guards in Cypress?

Only if debris is landing in your gutters. If your roof sits under trees, BroGuard stainless micro-mesh keeps leaves and litter out while the rain still flows in, so the downspouts stay clear between visits. On a Cypress home with open sky overhead, a yearly cleaning may do the job, and we will tell you so.

What should I do to get ready for El Niño?

Start in the fall. NOAA has an El Niño Advisory in effect, so a wetter winter is possible. Have the gutters cleaned, every downspout flushed and any loose hangers or leaking joints fixed, then make sure the water leaves your lot instead of collecting near the house. One visit from our crew covers all of it.
