Lakewood Gutter Solutionists

Gutters for Lakewood’s postwar tract homes

Lakewood was planned on open farmland by developers Louis Boyar, Mark Taper and Ben Weingart, with construction starting in late 1949. On the first day of sales, March 24, 1950, an estimated 30,000 people lined up to tour seven model houses. In less than three years the fields became 17,500 homes, finished at a pace of 40 to 60 houses a day. The community incorporated on April 16, 1954, and became the first city in the country to contract for all of its municipal services, an approach still called the Lakewood Plan. Its main boulevards, with landscaped medians and frontage roads along the residential stretches, came out of that same plan.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Anaheim is owned by Sara Baayoun, and our crew comes up from Fountain Valley to work Lakewood’s blocks. Here we clean and flush gutters by hand, reseal leaking seams and end caps, form seamless gutters on site, replace weathered fascia board and install BroGuard stainless micro-mesh. On houses this age we check the fascia behind every run, not just the gutter in front of it, and every estimate is free and in writing.

The NOAA 1991 to 2020 normal at Long Beach Daugherty Field, just across Lakewood’s western city line, is 12.02 inches of rain a year, and 8.06 inches of it falls December through February. February alone averages 3.02 inches. Census estimates date 54.5 percent of Lakewood’s housing to the 1950s and 68 percent to before 1960, so many roofs carry gutters and fascia that have been through decades of winters. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has an El Niño Advisory in effect and expects a strong El Niño through the winter, so a fall cleaning and a flush of every downspout is the simple first step.

Why the Brothers

Why Lakewood Homeowners Call the Brothers

01We know the 1950s house

Lakewood’s homes went up fast in the early 1950s, and we check the fascia, hangers and downspout outlets that wear out first.

02Fit to each yard

A house under a big backyard tree needs a different plan than one under open sky, and we set cleanings and guards to match.

03A local crew

We are based in Fountain Valley and work across Lakewood and the neighboring cities we serve, so return visits are easy to schedule.

04Talk to a local team

Year-round

Your Lakewood gutter calendar

Lakewood gets about 80 percent of its rain from December through March, so the year’s gutter work is planned around that window.

  1. Fall · Sep to NovClean before the rain

Summer debris has sat in the gutters for months. Clear it out and flush the downspouts before December.

  2. Winter · Dec to FebWatch the overflow

February is the wettest month at the Long Beach airport station. Water spilling over the front edge or staining the fascia shows us where to look.

  3. Spring · Mar to MayFix and protect

Repair what winter loosened, swap out soft fascia boards and add BroGuard where trees hang over the roof.

  4. Summer · Jun to AugReplace while it’s dry

Dry summer weeks are the best time for full gutter replacements, new downspouts and underground drain lines.

Lakewood Gutter Questions, Answered

How often should I clean the gutters on my Lakewood home?

At least once a year, in fall, before the rain starts. If a big tree hangs over the roof, plan on twice: once in fall and again in spring. Most of Lakewood’s rain falls December through February, so a gutter that is packed when the first storm arrives will overflow all winter. Our maintenance program schedules both visits for you.

My house is one of the original 1950s Lakewood homes. Do the gutters need to be replaced?

Not always. Many older runs can be cleaned, resealed and rehung. We recommend replacement when the metal is rusted through, the joints keep failing or the fascia behind the gutter has rotted. We show you what we find and put both options, repair and replacement, in a written estimate so you can choose.

Why does water pour over the corner of my gutter in a storm?

Corners collect debris first, and an inside corner below a roof valley takes water from two roof planes at once. If the nearest downspout is clogged or too small, the corner spills. We clear and flush it, check the slope and, where needed, add or enlarge a downspout so the corner can keep up.

Where should my downspouts drain?

Away from the foundation and the slab. On many lots the downspouts empty right beside the house or across the driveway. We can add extensions, splash blocks or underground drain lines that carry water out to a spot where it can soak in or drain off safely.

Should I book before El Niño this winter?

Earlier is easier. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has an El Niño Advisory in effect and expects a strong event through the winter. That raises the odds of a wet season but does not promise one. Either way, a fall visit clears the gutters, flushes the downspouts and fixes loose sections while the weather is dry.
